A project that harnessed the commitment and effort of dozens of members of the Wongan Hills community came to fruition on March 18 with the official opening of the Mocardy Centre. Funded by Royalties for Regions, Lotterywest and the Anglican Diocese of Perth, the project made use of a vacant block beside St Peter’s Anglican Church, providing a multipurpose building to meet the needs of groups across the local community.

Priest-in-charge of Wongan-Ballidu Parish, Ven. Canon Kathy Barrett-Lennard, praised the efforts of those who contributed time and expertise to imagine what might be possible, develop plans, source funds and nurture the project through to completion. The building will provide a venue to deliver community services ranging from emergency relief support through to meeting space for community groups.

Opening the facility, Member for Central Wheatbelt, Hon Mia Davies MLA recalled her own childhood growing up in a rural town and how much people voluntarily contributed to ensure the quality of community life was high. She highlighted the importance of such broad community involvement in the development of the Mocardy Centre, speaking of “leadership by everyday people, everyday”.
