A new satellite access station to support high speed mobile broadband will be based in Merredin.
Called Global Xpress, the new service from UK-based Inmarsat is designed to provide high-speed broadband Internet access on land, at sea and in the air.
The Global Xpress network currently consists of four satellites, each approximately the size of a London double decker bus, which fly in a geostationary orbit some 35,000km above the Equator. Each satellite is supported by two satellite access stations which provide the data link between the spacecraft and the World Wide Web.
After assembly, testing and commission, the SAS will operate automatically requiring only weekly maintenance visits.
