The Bilya Koort Boodja Centre of Nyoongar Culture and Environmental Knowledge official opening was held on 10 August 2018 followed by a family festival celebration on 11 August 2018 including a live stage show, cultural displays, stalls and activities.

The regional tourist attraction was developed in collaboration with the Shire of Northam Aboriginal Advisory Group and was supported by National Stronger Regions Funding of $2.1million, Lotterywest funding of $2 million and Royalties for Regions Wheatbelt Regional Grants Scheme 2016 funding of $300,000.

Located on the Avon River in Northam’s CBD, the Centre offers local Aboriginal art and craft and will provide a space for ceremony, meeting, teaching, learning and an opportunity for developing skills and businesses.

Bilya Koort Boodja in the Nyoongar language translates to River Heart Lands in English. The Centre offers an educational experience to recognise the rich Aboriginal culture of the Ballardong region, including a yarning circle, a sorry space and interactive displays.

It will provide an opportunity to blend Aboriginal knowledge and environmental programs, developing approaches to land management that incorporate traditional principles.  The Centre aims to attract 10,000 visitors in its first year of operation including schools and tour buses.
