30/06/2009
Wheatbelt Development Commission Chair Mr Darren West today announced funding of $3,431,457 towards 24 projects in the Wheatbelt region as part of the 2008-2009 Royalties for Regions, Regional Grants Scheme.
The latest round of funding will substantially contribute to the economic and community development of the Wheatbelt.
“The Shire of Dandaragan’s Jurien Bay Foreshore and Jetty Redevelopment will provide the State with a valuable infrastructure project which compliments the soon to be completed Indian Ocean Drive” he said.
“The project scope itself creates entrepreneurial opportunities that attract further investment and employment. Jurien Bay is widely recognised as the sub regional centre for the Central Coast and a focal point in this community will benefit all those living in and visiting the area.”
The Chair stated the Community Arts Network was also successful in securing funding to deliver the Wheatbelt Cultural Development Program. “We know worldwide that diminishing social capital and personal interaction needs, leads to physical and mental health issues. The Wheatbelt South has a long running history of indigenous mental health and social issues.”
“This project will use art as a conduit to engage with those sections of the Indigenous community most at threat to open up opportunities for the people to participate successfully in mainstream economic activity.”
Doorways Inc received $200,000 to provide essential headworks to the Merredin Trade Training Centre ensuring that its location benefits the local school, TAFE and businesses.
Volunteering WA received $122,500 to implement recommendations suggested by the Better Connection Report. “This project enables communities to develop and sustain volunteer efforts through maintenance of strong, viable community organisations”.
“This project will create strong support for groups and assist in attracting newcomers to participate in local capacity building as well as enable existing members to more efficiently run their affairs” the Chair said.
